Fresh garden herbs like peppermint often attract little hitchhikers (tiny aphids, beetles, or gnats), and it’s important to clean them well before using them for tea. Here are some safe ways to get rid of bugs while keeping your herbs fresh and tasty:
1. Rinse Gently in Cool Water
- Place your peppermint sprigs in a large bowl of cool water.
- Swish them around gently with your hands to loosen dirt and insects.
- Let them sit for a minute or two—bugs will often float to the top.
- Lift the herbs out (don’t pour the water over them, or you’ll dump the bugs back on).
2. Saltwater or Vinegar Soak (Bug Buster)
For a more thorough clean:
- Fill a bowl with cool water.
- Add 1 teaspoon of salt OR 1–2 tablespoons of vinegar per quart of water.
- Submerge the peppermint and let sit for 5–10 minutes.
- Rinse under fresh cool water to remove any residue and remaining insects.
(Both salt and vinegar are safe and effective at deterring bugs. A mild solution won’t affect flavor if you rinse well after.)
3. Use a Salad Spinner or Air-Dry
- After rinsing, pat dry with a clean towel or spin gently in a salad spinner.
- This prevents soggy leaves and helps your peppermint last longer in the fridge.
4. Prevent Future Bug Visitors
- If you’re growing peppermint, try giving it a quick rinse outside before bringing it in.
- Harvest in the morning after dew has dried (less bug activity).
- Store cleaned herbs wrapped in a damp paper towel inside a breathable bag in the fridge.
✨ Pro Tip: If you find fresh peppermint consistently buggy, you can also air-dry or dehydrate your cleaned leaves. Once dry, bugs are long gone, and you’ll have peppermint ready for tea anytime.
